Last Updated 12/29/2023. Since its inception in October 2017, the Northern Nevada Giving Tree has gifted over $157, 850 to Carson Valley Organizations (as of Jan. 2023). This year we are celebrating 5 years of giving back to our local community.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Northern Nevada Giving Tree, here’s what you need to know. You can also join our Facebook Group for details on meetings, nominations, and more.

What It Is

Northern Nevada Giving Tree is a philanthropic group focused on making a difference in Douglas County. Every member donates $100 per quarter to make an impact on a local non-profit organization within the community.

NNGT was founded by myself, Ginger Easley and my co-founder, Toni Van Winkle, in October 2017. We chatted about ways to serve local non-profit organizations, but weren’t sure where to start.

“Even during trying times, our community has shown its kindness and generosity. People truly want to give, but they often don’t know who to give to.” – Ginger Easley

We ended up founding Northern Nevada Giving Tree to solicit donations for area non-profits.

How It Works

Meeting Up

Northern Nevada Giving Tree meets once every quarter at various locations throughout the Carson Valley.

You can or you can donate via check in person at the quarterly meeting.

The processing is all handled by the 501(c) (3) non-profit The Giving Group. You’ll be charged $103.00 once a quarter; $100 goes directly to the non-profit that is voted on at the quarterly meeting and the $3.00 fee goes to The Giving Group for payment processing.

Once a year you will receive a receipt for your taxes from The Giving Group.

Nominations

Everyone puts the name of their non-profit in a hat and at the end of the hour we pick four names. Any non-profits nominated must be a Douglas County non-profit organization 501(c) (3).

We try to spend about 20 minutes learning about the various non-profits that may receive the money raised that evening so we can understand what they do, their role in the community, and how the money raised could benefit them.

Voting

The group then votes for one of the four non-profits to receive the money raised that evening.

Impact The Community

Once a non-profit is chosen, they are awarded all monies raised by Northern Nevada Giving Tree from that night. This is typically awarded within the next month or so after all funds have been accounted for and the founders meet up with the local organization awarded.
